Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 - Overnight Flight

On your overnight flight to Barcelona, begin imagining the adventure that awaits you. This journey will take you to some of the most historically fascinating and culturally rich countries in the world.

Day 2 - Barcelona

This is Spain’s cultural heart—a vibrant city of art, music and an undeniable zest for life. You’ll have a few days to soak in the sensory delights of this Catalonian capital city nestled between the shimmering Mediterranean Sea and the scenic Pyrenees Mountains. A Go Ahead representative will greet you at the airport after you clear customs and then escort you to your hotel, after which you are free to begin exploring Barcelona. Later, meet your fellow travelers at a welcome dinner.

Day 3 - Barcelona

Today, a local guide leads you through Spain’s most cosmopolitan city. Pass by the alleys of medieval Barri Gòtic, and admire the modern structures at Montjuic Hill, site of many events at the 1992 Olympic Games. Discover two of Antoni Gaudí’s art-meets-architecture achievements—the surreal spires of La Sagrada Família and Parc Güell, the imaginative garden village with beautiful views of the city.

Day 4 - Barcelona

In addition to hosting the largest collection of Gothic architecture in Europe, Barcelona exudes a electric energy. Whether sipping sangria in a bohemian cafe on Placa Real or milling about among the street performers of tree-lined La Rambla, immerse yourself in this fun-loving culture during your free time. You can also choose an optional excursion to the ninth-century Monastery of Montserrat, home to the Black Virgin statue that still draws thousands of devoted pilgrims each year. In the evening, enjoy a delicious meal and a demonstration of the passionate national dance at an optional Flamenco Dinner Show.

Day 5 - Nimes

Today you’ll set off for Nimes in France, stopping en route in the ancient fortified city of Carcassone, where you can explore La Bastide, Pont View, and the tranquil, tree-lined banks of Canal du Midi. Arriving in Nimes, buildings from many eras surround you. It is like wandering through history: going past the modern streets humming with traffic, and suddenly you encounter some of the most impressive Roman ruins in the world. The center of town is car-free, adding to the surreal, authentic feel of antiquity.

Day 6 - Nice

Witness the remarkable preservation of Roman buildings—most notably the striking Maison Carree, Jardins de la Fontaine and Tour Magne—as you tour this morning. Though the town is full of ancient edifices, the star is Nimes Arena. Built around A.D. 100 with a capacity of 24,000, this amphitheater is such a well-preserved example of Roman architecture that it was used in the film Gladiator. You’ll have a chance to walk through this piece of history, envisioning what life was like in a distant epoch. Later, after a stop at Pont du Gard—the three-tiered aqueduct whose grandeur and beauty recall the heights of Roman civilization—you’ll drive to the singular city of Nice. Ethnically diverse and breathtakingly beautiful, this coastal city offers something for the sun-worshipper, history buff and culture lover alike. This evening, enjoy an included dinner in this Mediterranean gem.

Day 7 - Nice

Take your time to discover the jewel of the French Riviera. Set on sun-kissed shores of the Mediterranean, Nice offers a superb combination of ancient history and modern sensibility. The romantic Vieille Ville’s cobbled charm evokes a simpler time, yet the city remains a hub of metropolitan excitement. You can choose to roam the quaint alleyways of the city, relax on the beach or should you wish, choose an optional excursion to Cape Ferrat. Stroll past the elegant villas in the luxurious seaside haven of Cape Ferrat. This evening, you may opt to channel your inner James Bond at the iconic Monte Carlo Casino on our Monaco by Night excursion.

Day 8 - Italian Riviera

Today you’re off to the fabled Italian Riviera. With the Apennine Mountains for a backdrop and the sparkling Mediterranean in front of you, each day seems to bring a sigh of contentment. The region offers both charming inland villages and jet-set coastal style that has always drawn artists and celebrities. Enjoy this afternoon to relax before an included dinner this evening.

Day 9 -Italian Riviera

A travel treasure awaits: Cinque Terre, an idyllic cluster of five villages set on the seaside cliffs. Set among olive groves and petite vineyards, these hill-hugging towns are a must-see on the Italian coast. You’ll begin with a stop in Portovenere and continue on to Vernazza and Monterosso, visiting these remote hamlets that for centuries were in their own separate world. If weather permits, you’ll travel between the villages by boat, where you can soak in the dramatic Cinque Terre cliffs. If the seas are a bit choppy, you’ll travel by train through the Ligurian hills. (Please note: Portovenere is not included when traveling by train).

Day 10 - Florence

This morning, it’s off to Florence, the city at the center of the Renaissance. You’ll delve into Italy’s artistic heart, discovering the legendary Duomo and the Church of Santa Croce, burial site of Michaelangelo, Machiavelli and Galileo. Walk by Giotto’s Campanile—a masterpiece of Gothic architecture—and Palazzo Signoria, the center of Florentine civic life. Your knowledgeable guide will likely regale you with tales of the powerful Medici, the family whose influence helped shape the history of Europe over several centuries.

Day 11 -Florence

Today is yours to explore Florence, which was once the most important city in Europe. Peruse the works of masters at the Uffizi or visit the Accademia Galleria to view Michelangelo’s David. If you like, an optional excursion to the Tuscan hill town of San Gimignano is available. San Gimignano was a pilgrimage stop on the way to Rome and the medieval home to rival families who built 72 towers to show off their wealth. The 14 that have survived present a superb example of architecture in the Middle Ages. Tonight, savor food and camaraderie at your farewell dinner.

Day 12 -Florence

A Go Ahead representative helps you transfer to the airport for your flight home. As you bid farewell, reflect back on a truly extraordinary journey. If you are taking the extension, continue onto Rome by coach.
